Behind the Scenes: Making Our Latest SomerPure Laundry Soap Batch

Another batch underway at the SomerPure workshop

This week we’ve been making another development batch of the coconut-oil soap that will eventually become our Natural Laundry Flakes.

Rather than just showing you the finished product, we thought we’d share some of the actual process behind it — from preparing the coconut oil, through moulding and cutting, to the drying and monitoring stage.

We’re still developing and testing, so keeping good records and learning from each batch is an important part of what we’re doing here at SomerPure.

Preparing the batch

We begin by carefully preparing the coconut oil and monitoring its temperature before making the soap. Recording details like this throughout each batch helps us compare results and develop a consistent process.

Into the moulds

Once the soap-making process was complete, the fresh coconut-oil soap was poured into our moulds and left to set. This is another stage we monitor carefully before the soap is removed, cut and moved into the drying process.

Cutting, drying and monitoring

After setting, the soap was removed from the moulds and cut into 24 pieces ready for drying.

We have selected two pieces from this batch as dedicated test samples. Their starting weights are 127.0 g and 116.8 g, and we’ll weigh the same two samples at regular intervals throughout the drying period.

This gives us a simple, measurable way of monitoring moisture loss and helps us understand when the batch has reached a stable condition before moving on to the next stage of development.

What happens next

Once the drying stage is complete, we’ll assess the results before processing the soap into our Natural Laundry Flakes and continuing our wash-testing programme.

We’re taking SomerPure through this process step by step — making, testing, recording and improving as we work towards the finished SomerPure Natural Laundry System.
